Hawks Win

The Hawks won last night at Phillips Arena to even their series with the Celtics at 2-2.  Here is a video of Al Horford (who we officially forgive for having gone to Florida) getting in Paul Pierce’s grill in game 3.  Just prior to this moment Pierce had taken a flop that would have made Cristiano Ronaldo proud

Best d’Atlanta - 4.24.2008

[Do you think Rachel Ray might know how to balance a budget?]

  1. The AJC has a report on a poll saying that metro voters would pay higher sales tax for more public transport.  We have a better idea, how about apportioning some of the already existing state transportation budget to methods of transportation other than roads.
  2. Creative Loafing has details on the impending city budget cuts and tax hike.  Shirley Franklin - at midnight she turns back into Bill  Campbell.
  3. Bloglanta talks Castleberry Hill.
  4. How can you tell Forsyth is the new Gwinnett County?  They are getting an AMC Movie Theatre.  Colonial 18 4-eva yiggity yo.

Larry Munson as the Voice of God

EDSBS has this cut from the Cartoon Network show Squidbillies. We pretty much already knew that God sounded just like Larry.

GSU Football

We are in the eye of the finals hurricane.  Here is another AJC story on GSU football.

Grady Hospital - A Proven Loser When it Comes to PR

We saw this article in the AJC.  Grady says it may not be able to work the Peachtree this year.  They go on to say this.

The overall cost of Peachtree coverage, not counting setup, is close to $20,000, Grady officials said. Grady does not bill the Atlanta Track Club, which furnishes some equipment to the bike teams. “It’s the hospital giving back to the community,” Davenport said.

Wow, whatever will the Road Race do?  We are guessing they will hire a private company to work the event.  Some quick arithmetic indicates that $20,000 is barely more than one percent of the amount of money brought in by entries alone.  Add sponsorship dollars and we are guessing this sum equates to less than one-half of one percent.

[Taking bids now!]

This is not a clever ploy.  Outside the city (and often within) Grady is seen as a money hemorrhaging, medicare/medicaid abusing, hospital for the poor.  The Peachtree Road Race is one of the hospitals best opportunities to show exurbanites all the good it does.  Remember, it is much easier to hate things you aren’t familiar with.

Football at Georgia State is Happening

The papers reported this yesterday.  The following e-mail was just sent out to all GSU students.

Georgia State University Faculty, Staff and Students:

Are you ready to tailgate??!!   If you are, then plan to be at the Student Center Atrium tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 p.m. for the announcement regarding the future of football at Georgia State.

You don’t want to miss this one!!

Don’t know what the “You don’t want to miss this one!!” language means.  Surprises possible???

This team will provide more opportunities to play near home for many talented Georgia high school athletes.  Believe us, there are hordes of them.

Georgia State, soon to become our own little USF.

Jon Stewart Coming to Atlanta

[Will Judson Hill, Phil Gingrey, Newt Gingrich attend?]

Well, not exactly.   He is coming to the Cobb Energy Center on 10 May 2008.  Is Cobb County really in Jon Stewart’s target market?  In those environs being seen at a Jon Stewart show might be worse than being seen at a liquor store. The tickets look pricey according to Cable & Tweed.

Sweetwater 30th Best Selling Craft Brewer in the USA, 43rd Overall

Sweetwater was one of only two Southeastern bottlers to make the 2007 Brewers Association Top 50 List.  New Orleans area brewer Abita came in at number 17 on the craft list.  California led all states (and likely most nations) with 11 breweries on the list.  Here is a look at the number of breweries in the top 50 for a few other states.

  1. Colorado - 6
  2. Vermont - 3
  3. New York - 3
  4. Oregon - 5
  5. Massachusetts - 2 (both in top 10)

We see nothing but growth for GA and the rest of the Southeast.  Further, we would love to know where Highland (Asheville, NC) and Terrapin fall on the overall list

[$3.99 Twelve packs forever]

Oh, and nothing from Florida.  With a population of 18 million plus.  Someone who crafted a beer that tasted just like Milwaukee’s Best Light could make a mint.

Virginiaca

This was on SNL several weeks ago. We find all these Virginiaca skits to be hilarious. Where is the Atlanta connection? Kenan Thompson hails from Atlanta. Further, there is Chick-fil-A reference.
