Best d’Atlanta - 4.2.2008 (Google Reader Was Crazy Full Edition)

[The paternalism continues.]

  1. Urban Gardeners new location in East Atlanta Village is having its grand opening this weekend.  It is located at 491-B Flat Shoals behind Sugar Britches.  While the store is pretty pricey the staff are excellent and the selection is varied.
  2. The UGA baseball team pounded Clempson last night.  Official UGA has the dirty details.
  3. Dennis Dodd has a great article on new Tech coach Paul Johnson.  It seems to us that the chip on Johnson’s shoulder will be uber popular with the angst-ridden male attendants and alumni of the Institute.
  4. Cynthia Tucker takes it easy on Mayor Franklin.  In our opinion she is a mayor without a legacy running a government only slightly more efficient than what we got under Bill Campbell.
  5. Sunday Sales = Dead.
  6. Drive a Faster Car has the 2008 Chastain schedule.  Embarrassing fact - we have never been to Chastain.  Stepford North Atlanta is scary.
  7. A few days back PWD did some interesting analysis of the future of Georgia men’s basketball.  Okay, you can go back to obsessing about football now.
  8. Potentially free New Pornographers tickets at Cable & Tweed.  Need we say more?
  9. Metroblogging with a nice find regarding MARTA’s new operating chief.
  10. New bowl game to be played in DC.  It has an ACC tie-in.  Despite the potential for chilly weather it has great travel possibilities.  GT Sports Blog.

[Cheap Beer Available.]

  1. Pop Death Squad is having its monthly free Big Trouble in Little 5 Points show. Dancin’ shoes required. Drive a Faster Car with details.
  2. Slapppy Kingston continues to shine in his role as Republican Hatchet Man - Obama Division.
  3. Preston at kissatlanta says is refocusing his blog. He says he is moving away from electronic music and returning his focus to our fair city. We couldn’t be happier. See if you can catch what we guess is a Michael Pollan reference in the post.
  4. GT Sports has range. Info on the GT Presidential search.
  5. Remember how that sales tax hike you voted on was supposed to prevent hikes in water rates? Whoopsie.

[EAST ATLANTA BEER FEST!]

  1. Tony Barnhardt talks about the Ray Ray McElrathbey (that dude who adopted his little brother) situation up at Clemson. Interesting stuff.
  2. Built to Spill and the Meat Puppets play tonight at the Variety Playhouse. Creative Loafing has slightly more info.
  3. GT Sports Blog has a neat map showing where various ACC recruits hail from. We are currently inquiring about the existence of an SEC version.
  4. EAST ATLANTA BEER FEST! EAST ATLANTA BEER FEST! EAST ATLANTA BEER FEST! Looks like prices went up.

[College Football Schadenfreude is the best type of schadenfreude.]

  1. The AJC asks rich people what they would buy if they won the lottery. How did nobody see the unintentional irony and kill this thing. For strong stomachs only.
  2. Nice find here by CL about who will be moving in to the Cabbagetown space formerly occupied by Village Pizza Co. One of the first times we ever visited Cabbagetown a dude got shot. True story, yet we still love Cabbagetown.
  3. California pizza restaurant zpizza has opened at Spire. AroundMidtown, a solid intown blog, has more details.
  4. An excellent neighborhood and an excellent way to get drunk are coming together. Tomorrow is the Oakhurst Wine Crawl. Decatur Metro drops the knowledge.
  5. Spoon hits town on April 14th. You should probably think about being there. Cable & Tweed.
  6. This Buckhead Library issue is picking up steam. Hopefully the good guys will win on this one. GT hosted a forum on the issue last night.
  7. Lenox Mall is asking to have huge trees cut down because people can’t see their sign. They are also hosting a festival named after a tree. So, yeah.
  8. Georgia Sports Blog talks about Felton’s future. We are feeling ambivalent, and that is a helluva lot worse than being mad. UGA needs to win some basketball games. Or sign Derrick Favors.
  9. Behind this EDSBS curtain you will see Barack Obama doing the Heisman pose whilst holding an actual Heisman trophy.
  10. There was a 7 Wonders of the World theme park, convention center, and resort planned. Huh?!?! Oh, and a indoor water park, just what we need. The AJC comes full circle with an interesting story.

[When you say “Omaha” this is what pops into our heads.]

  1. Braves and Birds talks about the Mike Bibby trade. This is the best analysis we have seen on the deal. Of course, you don’t typically get a lot of in depth coverage of the 9th best team in the Eastern Conference.
  2. The AJC has a good op-ed on the possible destruction of the Buckhead Library. The razing of a postmodern landmark will make the entire city look like philistines.
  3. One of the CL quasi-blogs visited new restaurant The Depot on Memorial Drive. The restaurant, which resides in an old train depot, is run by the same people who own Vickery’s. We are planning on visiting this place very soon.
  4. Georgia Sports Blog points out that UGA has made the College World Series in each of the last two even numbered years. We’re sold. Where can we pick up our tickets to Omaha?
  5. The Coathangers and the Selmanaires are playing the Earl. C&T with a little bit extra.

[Radiohead, Hell Yes!]

  1. Georgia Season ticket holders and season ticket wannabes don’t forget that this Friday, February 15 is the deadline for donations.  These donations are the only way to become eligible to purchase season tickets.  Here is the donation website.
  2. There is a motion to dismiss the Cobb EMC case due to the statute of limitations.  For those who don’t know, this non-profit electric cooperative has been the personal piggy bank of for profit company Cobb Energy.  Sounds confusing, the AJC with more.
  3. RADIOHEAD!  RADIOHEAD! RADIOHEAD!  May 9th at Lakewood (that is what it is called again, yay).  Pre-sale begins tomorrow.  Cable & Tweed has the details.
  4. The SEC helmet schedules are available at EDSBS.  Those who watch SEC football and don’t know what we are talking about should be ashamed.
  5. Jason Pye is talking about SB 59.  This bill aims to make it illegal for those under 18 to register for Myspace.  It appears the State Senate has pulled off the ultimate double play, appeasing the hysterical while pandering to the ignorant.

AJC with details
  5. Interested in inexpensive furniture?
  6. Bro, the Bonnaroo line up is up. The shift away from Jam Bands continues. Who do we like in the line up - Kanye, M.I.A., Pearl Jam, Willie Nelson, Robert Randolph, Lupe Fiasco, Rilo Kiley, Drive By Truckers, Aimee Mann, Black Kids. Cable & Tweed with the full dealio.
  7. H&M is adding a second store in Atlanta before the first store even opens. It will be at North Point Mall. I wish the word “metrosexual” wasn’t so passe, because we totally could have used it. Atlanta Business Chronicle with more.
  8. Reknowned Atlanta hater and hip hop heavyweight Pimp C’s death has been attributed to sippin’ on the syzzurp.
  9. Here is an interesting column from the AJC about how the mortgage [insert any term but crisis] has affected homeowner’s association dues collection. What will suburban parents do without lifeguards to babysit their kids this summer?
  10. The dates for Corndogorama have been set. That sentence sounds funny enough on its own.

The Zakk Tyler Morning Show is Pretty Awful

The loss of 99x left a power vacuum in the world of bad morning radio. The combined bad radio powers of both the Bert Show and the Regular Guys were unable to fill this void. Enter the Zakk (zany DJ spelling of Zack/Zach) Tyler Morning Show on Dave FM.

We are not going to hate on Dave FM just for the sake of being hip. Typically, we listen to WABE in the morning and a mix of V103 and Hot 107.9 in the afternoons and evening (we are guessing this puts us in a very unique subset of radio listeners). Lady d’Urbain is a huge fan of the Dave FM, and we can’t object to a little Bowie and Van Morrisson in the morning. Thus, this is what we listen to during the shower and shave routine.

[Zakk Tyler - Your Zany/Insane/Wacky/Crazy/Wild Morning DJ]

Thus, I was very confused when I awoke to the sounds of one of Lady d’Urbain’s favorite albums a couple mornings ago. She told me that, despite her undying love of Dave FM, she could not take any more of the inane Zakk Tyler Morning Show. She turned it back to the station and after a few minutes of listening and I understood what she had meant. Dave FM describes the show:

Tune in weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. to Zakk Tyler and “Sweet Baby Jane” Monzures for a new take on morning radio. Finally, a local show that talks about the things that adults in Atlanta really think… and actually care about.

Yes, finally, a show that tries to get at what Atlanta thinks. No radio show has ever tried to tap into the vast unknown of the things that Adults in Atlanta really think. [Read more →]

  1. The Whigs played Letterman the other night. Cable & Tweed has the video.
  2. The city has a $70 million budget shortfall. One of the budget cuts involves the reduction of travel expenses. Shirley Franklin travel related irony ensues.
  3. Chick-fil-A is a fast food business beast. The Atlanta Business Chronicle has the details.

[The Regular Guys - Conservative Blowhard Radio Disguised as a Rock Morning Show]

  1. No team has a buy week before playing Georgia in 2008.  This will be nice for those of us who remember the BCS ruining Tennessee Massacre of 2007.  See Get The Picture for the rest of the story.
  2. Feliz Cumpleanos to Cable and Tweed.  Atlanta’s best music blog-type thing is 2 years old.
  3. The Regular Guys are back.  Let the race baiting begin.  Drive a Faster Car has more.
