Jon Stewart Coming to Atlanta

[Will Judson Hill, Phil Gingrey, Newt Gingrich attend?]
Well, not exactly. He is coming to the Cobb Energy Center on 10 May 2008. Is Cobb County really in Jon Stewart’s target market? In those environs being seen at a Jon Stewart show might be worse than being seen at a liquor store. The tickets look pricey according to Cable & Tweed.

2008 a Re-realigning Election?
We use the term re-realigning because Georgia only became a Republican stronghold in the last 10 years. Let us be clear, we don’t seriously think their will be a Democratic coup in Georgia, but today’s polling numbers will provide insight into how deep Georgia’s republican roots run. Here are some unsubstantiated untested theories as to why the Democrats could make gains in Georgia later this year.
Republican domination of statewide politics has been fueled by tremendous growth in suburban counties like Cobb and Gwinnett. These counties are characterized as citadels of conservative middles class families, but are these inner suburban counties becoming more purple? We hate using this simplistic color classification nomenclature, but it works.

[Thou shall covet thy neighbor’s votes]
African-Americans are moving to the suburbs in greater numbers. Gwinnett County is over 20% black, in 1990 it was just above 5% black. Cobb County was just under 10% black in 1990, today the number is 23%. We can only surmise that this trend is continuing. Since FDR, there has never been a more solid a democratic voting bloc than African-Americans . [Read more →]

Best d’Atlanta - 1.26.2008

[Who knows when we’ll have the opportunity to put up a Degas painting again?]
- The PATH Foundation is the Georgia entity that creates paved multipurpose trails. Their most prominent work to date is the Silver Comet Trail. A group called the Three Forks Heritage Alliance is gearing up for a legal battle over PATH construction through Mason Mill Park in unincorporated Dekalb County. RGM has more.
- Weekday Braves games are starting earlier this season. Monday through Thursday games will begin at 7:10 pm instead of 7:35. If it puts more people in the seats we are all for it. Now if they would only bring back the $7.00 24 ounce tallboys.
- The Atlanta Ballet is moving out to the Cobb Energy Centre. We would act all indignant, but if the City of Atlanta doesn’t support the arts, we deserve to lose it. Big Boi, the Purple Ribbon All Stars, and the Atlanta Ballet are still scheduled to perform at the Fox. An AJC faux blog has more.

A Light Shines In Suburban Atlanta
Could this title have been any more condescending? Probably, not. Here are a series of articles about transportation in the suburbs, from the suburbs
![]()
[The motif continues!]
- Here is an article from the Gwinnett Daily Post talking about extending MARTA out to Gwinnett Place Mall. What is this Gwinnett Place Mall they speak of? It was a place popular to go when Merry Go Round was still in business. Cross Colours and Jnco forever, yo.
- This Marietta Daily Journal does an excellent job discussing the perils of instituting rail transportation in the suburban counties. That’s it. No jokes available.
- Down in Fayette County the Citizen talks about a commuter line to Peachtree City. To fund this project before funding before Cobb and Gwinnett would be, well, stupid. For a good laugh look at the comments, sorry we couldn’t help ourselves. One person writes, “Why did I move to Peachtree City?”, making him only person in Atlanta to make a relocation decision solely on a hatred of public transportation.

Stadium - A Morality Play
[Maybe they will build a cool modern stadium. Sometimes we say crazy things.]
Three friends are walking through the Mall of Georgia. Traffic is slow even for a weekday, and there is much browsing and little buying.
Gwinnett: The thing is Fulton you should really be planning and investing in your money, not wasting it at a mall. Look at me; I build new schools every year. They say the children are our future.
Fulton: Who are they?
Gwinnett: You know.
Fulton: Whitney Houston?
Gwinnett: Stop it. You understand what I am saying. Fiscal conservatism is the only way to survive in this world. You need to stop spending money on larks like public transportation. People have cars for God’s sake.
Cobb: Hey! Seriously guys, cool it on the blasphemy. Does the sporting goods store sell guns?
Fulton: What about our new water system?
Gwinnett: That is smart, but if you had planned better, maybe you wouldn’t need a new water system. Also, you need to stop dating all these losers. That guy Bill stole all your money, and Shirley is out of town so much you could hardly call it a relationship. [Read more →]
